How Long to Hard-Boil an Egg

The length of time your egg will spend in the boiling water depends upon how soft or hard you want your egg to be. Cooking time will thus differ between a jammy egg and a deviled-egg, for instance. If you’re wondering how to cook the perfect hard-boiled egg to your desired level of softness, check out our hassle-free recipes below!

Directions

Soft Eggs

If you want to make jammy eggs with an extra-gooey center, you’ll want to cook your hard-boiled eggs for less time. Follow these steps:

  1. To begin, use a spoon to place your eggs in a medium pot or saucepan. Lower the eggs one-by-one into the pan, carefully putting them on the bottom to avoid cracking or breaking.
  2. Add enough water to cover the eggs and place the pan over medium heat. Add a dash of salt and bring the water to a boil. Once the water begins to boil, cover the pot with a form-fitting lid and reduce the heat to low.
  3. Cook the eggs for an additional 4 minutes. Immediately remove the pan from the heat and drain the eggs in cold water. In a separate bowl, add a handful of ice and cold water. Place the eggs in the water for 3 minutes, drain and pat off the excess water with a napkin. Peel and serve.

Medium-Soft Eggs

Medium-boiled eggs are the happy medium between a gooey interior and a solid yolk. If you want your eggs to emerge creamily, aim for a medium-soft consistency by following these steps:

  1. Using a ladle or spoon, lower your eggs one-by-one into a medium saucepan or pot. Add a few cups of water to cover the eggs entirely.
  2. Sprinkle the salt into the water and turn the stove to a medium heat setting. Turn the heat down low once the water begins to bubble and cover the pot with a lid.
  3. Allow the eggs to cook covered for an additional 7 to 8 minutes. Drain immediately and rinse with cool water. Transfer the eggs to a bowl with ice-water for roughly 3 minutes. Drain, peel and serve.

Hard-Boiled Eggs

When you want hard-boiled eggs, you want your egg to be, well, hard! Hard-boiled eggs are completely solid but retain a soft and chewy texture, which makes them suitable for endless dishes. Follow these steps:

  1. Carefully add your eggs to a medium pot and add enough water to cover the eggs completely.
  2. Add a dash of salt to the water and bring the water to a boil over medium heat. Cover the pot with a lid and cook for an additional 9 to 10 minutes.
  3. Remove the pot from the heat and rinse with cold water. Chill the eggs in a bowl of ice water. Peel and serve.
