70th Annual Volunteers of America Captiol Egg Hunt
Yesterday
was the 70th Annual Volunteers of America Captiol Egg Hunt at the state capitol
in Harrisburg. (Every year since 1937.) As usual, we spend about 4 hours getting
set up only to watch each group of children pick up all their eggs in about
90 seconds. I call it the world's shortest special event.
* For about the 15th year, the children "hunted" over 7,000 real,
hardboiled, dyed eggs donated by Sauder's Eggs in Lititz. Sauder's also provide
eggs for the White House. Thanks Paul and Ken.
* Each child also received Peeps from Just Born in Bethlehem. A great candy
isn't made .... it's Just Born! Thanks Ross, David, Sam, Cindy, Carol, and Vicki
for your support of the egg hunt, and particularly for all you do for The Volunteers
of America Children's Center in Allentown.
* Each child received Jolly Rancher Crayons from Hershey's. Thanks Jennifer
and Stephen for the different ways you support Volunteers of America.
* And, every child got to pick out a couple of new books from Scholastic. Thanks
to the folks there.
This was also Fuller Runyon's (director of public events at the capitol complex)
15th year to work with us on the Egg Hunt. I know he stays busy and has other
staff, but he personally makes sure things at the Capitol Complex are ready
for the Egg Hunt.
Like Ken Fisher at Sauder's -- although any number of others could deliever
the eggs, Ken takes the time to drive over and personally deliver them.
The weather was great. Sunny and a tad cool. Had plenty of volunteer help. A
youth group from the Chambers Hill United Methodist Church lead by John and
Gidget Felty; Patrick Patterson and crew from the Greater Harrisburg Church
of Christ; and volunteers with Beth Herr from Commerce Bank. Plus our own staff
and board and council members.
A big hit, for the 2nd year, was Kim Kennedy (our director of mental health
supportive living) in the Easter Bunny costume.
The event went smoothly. We heard no complaints, and received quite a few compliments
from parents on how we run the egg hunt. Bottom line is we separate the children
by ages, and start each group about 5 minutes apart. That way, there are no
"big" kids running over the little ones.
Thanks to everyone for continuing such a great tradition.
Alan Garner, Dan Day, Diana Faust,
Some people can't imagine doing what we do.
We can’t imagine not doing it.
